Find your gear ratio from the axle codes 2011 – 2014 Mustang
Find your gear ratio from the axle codes on your 2011 – 2014 Mustang.
The first step in trying to figure out your gear ratio is to identify your axle code. This can be done one of two ways: the first way is to look on your axle tubes near your differential and the second is to look in the drivers door jam at the build stick. In the image below you will see what our build sticker says and can see that it is “YY”.
The 2011+ Ford Mustang GT axle codes and the corresponding gear ratios are as follows:
- BB – 3.73 ratio, base vehicle with manual or automatic transmission
- CC – 2.73 ratio
- DD – 3.55 ratio with manual transmission
- GG – 3.31 ratio with automatic transmission
- YY – 3.15 ratio
Since we identified out gear ration it all made sense why our gas milage was pretty good however we didn’t have to low end torque that we wanted. So we decided after a few years of driving around to go to a local speed shop and have some different gears put in. We decided on 4:10 gears which really made a huge difference and made the car fun!!! Once they were in we uploaded a new tune and we had crazy torque just by touching the pedal.
We have seen a number of people putting different gears in to accomplish being quicker off the line to bracket racing. However if you are not happy with your current gear set you can always install one of the aftermarket gears such as the ones below:
- 3.55 gears
- 3.73 gears
- 4.10 gears
- 4.56 gears
One word of caution though changing your gears is not just popping the in and out. You will want to make sure you know what your goal is for changing the gears. Whether it is for racing or tooling around town you need to make sure you understand everything. If your car is under warranty please check with the dealer to see if this affects your warranty.
